Let’s Applaud Each Other for the Right Reasons

Let’s Applaud Each Other for the Right Reasons

I used the word applaud in my title because it was through the sound of clapping and applause today that I had this thought: We need to be applauding (encouraging, praising, blessing) each other for the right reasons and not the wrong ones. Now you might be thinking, where is she going with that? So let me explain.

I have just spent the better part of today watching my daughter Dyanna’s volleyball team play in their provincial tournament. And I was sitting by a lady that was clapping VERY loudly every time her daughter’s team got a point. But you know what struck me? Not only did she applaud very loudly at EVERY point achieved by her daughter’s team, but VERY loudly at the fact that the point was earned because of a mistake of an opponent. Now don’t misunderstand me, volleyball is a competitive sport; I get that. But have you ever stopped to think about the things we applaud (even just silently in our heart) ? You see this woman beside me (and perhaps on other days I could just as easily be that woman; hence the reason for this reflection) applauded even louder when it was a result of a mishandled ball (mistake) on our team’s part. I tend, most often, to get louder at a good play. A play such as a spike slamming to the outside right corner or a tip ball that drops in an open gap. To me, those are well-executed plays. (And I have been known to clap and cheer for the other team, too!) I have on many occasions felt compassion for these young girls (regardless of the team they are on) when they miss a play, fumble a ball and are unable to execute a play well. (Yes, I know, they are learning to execute plays well and that it is part of maturing as a player, but bear with me for a bit!) Because I wondered to myself today how often, even without realizing it, do we take that competitive attitude (the one that celebrates others’ misses and shortcomings) and display that (even subtly) in our daily interactions with others?

As a result of my reflection today, I want to encourage you to celebrate each other for all the right reasons. Celebrate in each other the good choices being made; celebrate in each other the hard work displayed while accomplishing a God-given task; celebrate and praise each other for the good character traits that you see in each other; give thanks for the acts of love that you see displayed through each other. Let today be a day that we intentionally look for something to celebrate in each other. It is so easy, isn’t it, to get in the habit of looking for things done wrong? But, today is a new day! So let’s look for something right and celebrate it.

Love one another with brotherly affection [as members of one family], giving precedence and showing honor to one another.  Rom 12:10 (Amp)

Therefore encourage (admonish, exhort) one another and edify (strengthen and build up) one another, just as you are doing. 1 Thess 5:11(Amp)
